Girl Squad: Virtual Christmas Party

christmas dress

Continuing with my holiday outfit theme, our girl squad is styling some adorable wintertime brooches from Deer Arrow in our group post for today! We each styled a different brooch and decided to glam it up a bit with our outfit choices – it's like we're having a virtual Christmas party! Since we live so far away from each other, this is the closest we'll get to celebrating together this year. You can head over to Junebugs and Georgia Peaches and Southern (California) Belle to see additional photos and get more outfit details... but keep scrolling if you'd like to see how I styled my adorable Rudolph brooch with my new wintertime dress from Unique Vintage!

This dress from Unique Vintage is so darling – I really love the neckline and the sweet snowflake print. I just wish there had been a little bit of snow on the ground to complement it. So far, no snow yet. Although I'm sure I'll gripe about the never-ending snow later on this season, I can't help but wish for a white Christmas... even if it does mean I can't wear cute shoes anymore!

Gift wrapped

doll me up boutique

This is the first of many Christmas-y outfits that will be making an appearance here on the blog. My holiday ensembles are usually only seen once a year, so I'm trying to get more use out of them by devoting the rest of the month to yuletide apparel. I'm really getting into separates lately, and when I saw this lovely skirt from Doll Me Up, I knew I wanted to feature it. I have about 15 of these cropped cardigans (they're my absolute favorite and I wear them with everything), but this kelly green color is a brand new addition to my collection. Normally, I wouldn't go for something that so obviously screams "CHRISTMAS!," but I actually ended up liking this outfit a lot – and I'll be able to make lots of other combinations with these pieces.

This taffeta skirt comes in several different colors, and I was pleasantly surprised by how nice it is in person. Doll Me Up provides detailed measurements for every item they carry (which is a huge plus when shopping online), and I found this skirt to run true to the size chart provided. Unlike a lot of the pieces they carry, this skirt unfortunately doesn't come in extended sizes – but some of the cropped cardigans do! Both pieces are of great quality for the price, and I love the fact that I can always find good, inexpensive basics at Doll Me Up.

Friday Favorites #114

I'm living for the weekends these days, so I'm really glad it's finally Friday again. I did most of my Christmas shopping during the Black Friday bonanza, so I'm [mostly] on a bit of a shopping ban... unless I see something I just have to have... ;)  Here are some of the things I'm coveting this week:

The red version of these heels haven't arrived at ModCloth yet (they'll eventually be available in 4 different colors), but I'm eventually going to need a pair of these scalloped beauties!

I love these scalloped holiday-worthy heels, too!

It's sort of too late for this year, but I really do want this inappropriate Hanukkah sweatshirt:

I adore this present purse!

I want to get one of these cat packs for Pumpkin!
You can read more about them here and find the full assortment on Amazon.

If you really wanna #treatyoself this holiday, you can order these amazing Star Wars themed ice creams online! This company also has some other amazing-sounding flavors.

I've really been struggling with anxiety lately, and I've been hearing so much about these types of adult coloring books and how they can help. These two are on my wish list for Christmas, but let me know if you might have other recommendations!

These illustrations by Philippa Rice are wonderful. I really want her book.

Three really good reads from this week:

How To Hygge (Or: 29 Ways To Actually Enjoy Winter) – although I'm not ready for the cold, these ideas make the thought of wintertime sound much more bearable!

The Radical Potential Of A Woman Crying In Public – as a woman who cries a LOT, I found this incredibly captivating.

And finally (speaking of crying), I love this story of a husband writing down things that made his wife cry. So sweet and funny!

Breana

voodoo vixen breana

When you live in Upstate (or Western, to some) New York, you learn to appreciate long-sleeved dresses. It's starting to get really chilly up here, and my light cotton dresses are no longer cutting it. Fortunately, I recently added this adorable (and practical) dress from Voodoo Vixen to my collection. Although the sleeves are only 3/4-length, this baby kept me warm while snapping these photos (no easy feat!), and unlike a lot of my other pieces, it looks great with tights and boots. Plus, who could resist that collar?

I found this dress to run true to size, and although it features a (dreaded!) side zipper, I actually had no trouble zipping it up. (Fellow busty gals, you know what I'm talking about.) The collar actually unbuttons a bit as well, which is a great feature when you want to keep your 'do looking picture perfect. The skirt portion is less full than what I'm accustomed to these days (even my thin pettiskirt didn't look right underneath it, so I opted for a slip instead), but it's actually a nice change and means that it's more versatile and work-appropriate than many of my other pieces. It's always pleasant to realize you'll wear a dress more than you initially thought you would!

I've personally got my eye on this sunflower dress and this snowflake cardigan.

By the book

modcloth book dress

I hope you all had a nice holiday weekend! We had a pretty low-key Thanksgiving and decorated our (unfortunately fake) Christmas tree, and I saw the movie Suffragette with my friend Rusty. I'm dying to see Brooklyn as well, but maybe that'll happen another weekend. Though I've got film on the brain, today's outfit is all about books!

Although I actually own another book print dress, I like that this one is a little more colorful – and since my other one is currently too small on me, this one's way more comfortable too. My sense of style has definitely evolved over the past couple of years; although I'm usually drawn to fuller, longer skirts these days, this outfit reminds me of my early blogging days. It's both fun and practical, which can't always be said of my more retro-inspired looks. I don't consider my style to fit into any one category... I just like what I like. I guess my style isn't really "by the book." I don't really overanalyze it. If only that could transfer to other areas of my life.
