Menorah

ugly chanukah sweater

Tonight is the first night of Chanukah, so I'm taking a break from red and green to dress up like a little latke! I really love that I grew up celebrating both Chanukah and Christmas. There's so much that I love about these holidays (getting the chance to wear thematic outfits is chief among them) and I think it's so special that I get to partake in these family traditions. I actually don't have a menorah in my apartment and I might not get to have any latkes 'til next week, but I'm definitely celebrating in my heart – and in my outfit.

I don't really own any ugly Christmas sweaters, so this ugly amazing, light-up Chanukah sweater is really the first of its kind in my closet. Target had a bunch of Chanukah sweaters last year but they were available only online. So when I saw this one in the store, I had to snatch it up. Its light-up feature is actually fantastic (it changes colors!), but it wouldn't show up in these photos, sadly. You'll have to take my word for it that it's GREAT – plus, it's super warm and comfy. As you can tell, we got some snow, so it's great timing! I'll probably wear this sweater with leggings for Chanukah (more room for latkes), but I thought this Tatyana skirt was such a perfect color match that I had to try these two pieces out together.

Basic Isn't Bad

who what wear target bardot dress

If happened to see me this summer, chances are good that you saw me in this dress. Like many other girls, I picked up this "Who What Wear" striped bardot dress from Target and found it so comfy and cute that I rarely wanted to take it off. I think the bardot neckline is so romantic, and when it's combined with soft, easy cotton, I'm automatically a fan. Sadly, it's no longer available from Target, but I've linked similar ones in the outfit details section.

Wearing this dress got me thinking a little bit about basics. I tend to be drawn to unique, special pieces... but they usually have to be combined with a good basic to work. Basics are things we always need and want, but they aren't terribly exciting most of the time. And then I started thinking about how we describe other women as being "basic" for liking certain things. Admittedly, I love fall and pumpkin spice lattes as much as the next girl. I shouldn't feel ashamed for liking these things – or for wearing wardrobe staples – but it does have a negative connotation. I'm not sure why. But I'm going to embrace my love of basic things. Just because I'm wearing (or drinking) something basic, that doesn't mean I can't feel special.

Thought I was a donut

donut dress

There is definitely a donut obsession happening in our culture these days, and I am in no way immune.  I think the cupcake craze gave way to rounder, flatter cakes at some point, and even though the shape, frying and lack of frosting makes up for most of the difference, I'd definitely rather treat myself with a donut than a cupcake.  I guess this trend is true in my clothing, too; I have pieces with cupcakes on them, but I love the ones with donuts even more.

This pink donut "skirt" is actually a dress by Nishe, and although you can't really tell in these photos, the material is boiled wool, which makes it super warm and cozy.  I decided to try layering this fun sweater from Target over the top and tucking it into a belt.  It doesn't totally work, because the sweater is just a little too long and the belt isn't thick enough, but I liked the look of it in the photos.  Amazingly, I don't own any donut jewelry(!?), but I had to incorporate my New Look donut clutch!

Arts & Crafts (an outfit post)

 Outfit Details:
Scenic Painting Umbrella Skirt: ROMWE (see other ones here, here and here!)
Black mock turtleneck: Target (a few years back)
Gray stockings: Borrowed from Mom's collection
Lady in Rad Boots in Ink: ModCloth

Isn't this skirt divine?  When I saw Kate from Scathingly Brilliant wearing it in an outfit post not too long ago, my mouth dropped open because the same skirt was hanging in my closet, waiting to be worn!  It's such a cool print, and the print seamlessly continues onto the back (it repeats, but does so flawlessly).  In retrospect, I wish I had paired a long necklace with this outfit for one extra thing, but alas.  Next time!

Last weekend, my mom and I went to this great co-op here in Rochester.  There are a ton of stores there, offering everything from antiques to homemade goods.  We had been there once before, and I had seen this set of four beautiful cafe chairs (they were each painted a different pastel color and the seats were covered in pastel plaid and gingham fabrics).  They were having a 20% off everything sale, and I had hoped these chairs (which I hadn't stopped thinking about since we saw them) were still there, as they would have been a wonderful addition to Steven's and my future apartment.  I was heartbroken to discover that the chairs were gone, and was kicking myself for not insisting we purchase them when we spotted them! I swear that next time I find some beautiful, reasonably-priced metal cafe chairs, I will be buying them on the spot and painting them myself.

Luckily, with over 200 stores at the co-op, there was at least one thing that caught my eye: a vintage wood purse with decoupaged wild mushrooms!  And it was only $7 with the 20% off sale!

I also liked this hat (which was also very inexpensive, especially when you compare it to of all the similar hats listed on Etsy), but the shape looked pretty silly on my head.  I'd like to be more of a hat-wearing girl, but I think my head is too large to look good in a majority of them.  I mostly just admire them on other people.  I can rock a fascinator with the best of them, though.

Although the location of this place is a bit out of the way for us, I'm eager to go back at some point soon.  I should have taken a pictures of the white and orange retro hutch and old fridge they had.  I also can't wait to pair the purse with an outfit... and I already have one in mind!!  :)

Have a nice, restful Sunday!
