Menorah

ugly chanukah sweater

Tonight is the first night of Chanukah, so I'm taking a break from red and green to dress up like a little latke! I really love that I grew up celebrating both Chanukah and Christmas. There's so much that I love about these holidays (getting the chance to wear thematic outfits is chief among them) and I think it's so special that I get to partake in these family traditions. I actually don't have a menorah in my apartment and I might not get to have any latkes 'til next week, but I'm definitely celebrating in my heart – and in my outfit.

I don't really own any ugly Christmas sweaters, so this ugly amazing, light-up Chanukah sweater is really the first of its kind in my closet. Target had a bunch of Chanukah sweaters last year but they were available only online. So when I saw this one in the store, I had to snatch it up. Its light-up feature is actually fantastic (it changes colors!), but it wouldn't show up in these photos, sadly. You'll have to take my word for it that it's GREAT – plus, it's super warm and comfy. As you can tell, we got some snow, so it's great timing! I'll probably wear this sweater with leggings for Chanukah (more room for latkes), but I thought this Tatyana skirt was such a perfect color match that I had to try these two pieces out together.

O Christmas Tee

christmas pinup t-shirt

It's finally December, which means it's time for holiday-themed outfits! Hooray! As pretty much anyone can guess, I love dressing thematically and there's no better time to do that than the winter holidays. I'm starting off my collection of seasonal outfit posts with this cute-'n-casual ensemble.

Although I always feel like I *need* new Christmas items, I'm wearing a skirt from last year (ModCloth just came out with a Nutcracker version) and a pair of heels I snagged a few months ago on Zulily (which happen to be available again!). I could've gone a bit more low-key with the shoe choice, but I've been dying to try these out. Plus, they go really well with this adorable tee-shirt from Crazy4Me Style.

This tee is soft and comfy and fits true to size. Literally the only negative thing I can say (and it's about me, not the shirt) is that my chest kind of distorts the image of the girl! (#bustygirlproblems) Aside from that though, I really love this piece and it's definitely going to be a go-to for me over the next few weeks.

I guess this outfit is sort of a lot – especially since it's just three pieces – but I think it'd be really cute for a holiday celebration with friends, decorating the tree, baking cookies, or really anything that doesn't require dressing to the nines.

Have you started your holiday merriment yet? I'm hoping to get my tree up this weekend or early next week. I also enjoyed a really fun Christmas tea with my mom and grandma yesterday, which was such a nice break from the usual mundane workday. At least I have my evenings free now to get in the Christmas spirit! Plus... we're supposed to get snow today, eek!

Cherries and Lemons

lemon purse skinnydip

It may be December (which means holiday outfits are coming SOON!), but I'm challenging myself in today's post to style some summery items in a more wintery way. I can't turn down a novelty bag, and this lemon purse from Always Fits is so adorable. However, I was having trouble figuring out how to utilize it in an outfit. I went the fruity route and decided to wear this halter dress from Heart of Haute as a skirt. It may not be my favorite outfit of all time, but it made me realize how some pieces aren't as limited as I'd initially thought.

The show I'm in opens tomorrow, and it's not a moment too soon. It's been great to get back into the swing of things and sing again, but I'm absolutely exhausted. I need to start taking better care of myself and obtain a true work/life balance that I'm comfortable with. That'll definitely be a goal of mine for 2018. I'm also really excited to have a bit more free time during the week so I can get started on festive holiday things! My tree is waiting to be decorated and there are lots of cookies that need to be baked!

Beary Cute

silly old sea dog dress

Every once in a while, I'll look back on my older blog photos to see how much my style has evolved. I've changed quite a bit physically, no doubt, and my photo quality has shifted over the years, too. Even though I've embraced that same style ethos – retro-inspired and kitschy femininity – ever since I started blogging, I've chosen to express it in many different ways. Sometimes, it's good to revisit your roots and remind yourself of why you started loving something (in this case, fashion) in the first place.

My outfit today feels a lot like the ones I wore a few years ago on my blog, with its youthful quirkiness. What's weird is that I didn't feel nearly as comfortable in this outfit as I do in other styles I currently wear, even though this is an ensemble that's so indicative of the early days of The Soubrette Brunette. Maybe it's the shorter hemline or maybe it's a reminder of older chapters in my life I'd prefer not to revisit. But after a little while, I started to loosen up and recall how much exuberance I felt with those early posts. I love my style now, and I love my style for what it was then. And I love this little Silly Old Sea Dog dress for allowing me to revisit other times in my life (as weird as that feels to write).

bear print dress

First of all, this bear print is the unbearably cute. I've worn Silly Old Sea Dog on my blog in the past (you can find my Christmas post featuring their Nutcracker print dress here), but it's been almost three years since I styled anything from this adorable, independent brand. All of their pieces are produced in the UK and they have some of the best novelty prints around. Their shipping time is quite quick for being across the pond, and they're also very size-inclusive (they stock U.S. sizes 2-20). While I do wish that their dresses were a bit longer, that really comes down to personal preference; that said, if you do plan to place an order and are on the taller side (I'm 5'7", for reference), the skirt length may be something to keep in mind.

Now is actually the perfect time to try out one of their dresses for yourself – not only do they have an amazing Christmas collection and tons of fun accessories, but they're also offering free worldwide shipping to all my readers with the code SOUBRETTE (valid through December 6th on orders over £30). So if you haven't gotten yourself a holiday dress yet, get on it!

Corvette

crazy4me style

Happy Monday! It's hard to believe it's already the end of November. The holidays are right around the corner, and the show I'm in opens this weekend. It's been really difficult to find time to take photos (especially because the weather has been pretty crummy), but I was finally able to style this adorable tee from Crazy4Me Style!

You might recognize Yasmina from Instagram, but you might not know that she has her own cute clothing line! This pink corvette tee is just one of a few items I have from her shop. It's a really nice quality t-shirt and is so easy to style with skirts (one of my go-tos as of late!). If you plan to order one for yourself, note that it does fit on the tight side. Yasmina has size charts for each of her items, which is super helpful. I ended up going with the XL on this one and the fit is perfect. I went fairly simple with the styling of this top, but there are tons of other ways that you can wear it.

Did you buy anything fun this past weekend? There are lots of good Cyber Monday deals today too, but I'm pretty much spent (literally and figuratively). I mostly bought gifts for other people, but I still have a bit of shopping left to do. Luckily, I still have some time!

Have a great start to your week!

Thanksgiving Traditions

hell bunny pumpkin dress

Thanksgiving is tomorrow and I couldn't be more excited to eat mashed potatoes, yams, green bean casserole, and pumpkin pie. I'm definitely of the mindset that while having turkey is a given, the real stars of Thanksgiving are actually the sides. This Hell Bunny dress kind of pays homage to those dishes, with its cranberries, pumpkins, apples, and squash, so it seemed like a fitting choice for this holiday.

To be honest, this silhouette isn't my go-to these days, but it's definitely a cute little dress. It's also pretty lightweight and comfortable, which is good for eating (but not so great for warmth during this time of year). I really like Hell Bunny's seasonal pieces a lot, but I wish the fabric quality was a bit more aligned with the price point. I think I probably will wear this dress tomorrow, maybe with a green cardigan over it to break up the pattern a bit. It also goes perfectly with my little pumpkin necklace!

What are some of your favorite Thanksgiving dishes? I love hearing what families eat on Thanksgiving. We have mostly the same spread every year, but I think my mom is adding butternut squash soup to the menu this year! We also have this strange family tradition of having green Jell-O. I'm not sure when it started, but it's been part of the holiday since I was born. Tell me the dish you can't live without (or the one that might be silly but is also a must-have) in the comments!
