Friday Favorites #109: Birthday Wish List

My birthday is fast-approaching (it's only 5 days away!), so this week's Friday Favorites is doubling as my birthday wish list. I'd be lucky to get just a few of these items (and I've essentially resigned myself to the fact that I may never own a Kate Spade bag), so here are some of my ultimate birthday dream presents:

And speaking of presents... be sure to check back here on Monday. If I'm getting gifts, my readers will be too! If you've been following my blog for a while, you might know what's coming... and let's just say you don't want to miss it! ;)

Have a great start to your weekend!

Happy Haunts

halloween outfits

This post – or the idea of it, anyway – has been in the works for quite a while. My dear friends Rusty and Henry have appeared on my blog before (find other posts here and here), but we've wanted to do a post with all three of us for at least a year. Since Henry is moving to New York City in a couple of weeks, and Rusty is busy doing youth theatre tours out of Auburn, NY for the next 8+ months, I'm so glad the stars finally aligned in time for us to do this spooky Halloween post!

As a group, we tend to play a lot of quirky characters and villains, so a ghostly post seemed pretty perfect for us. We headed to Mount Hope Cemetery (where Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass, among many others, are buried) to snap a few photos. In all honesty, I generally dislike when people pose on or near gravestones, but Mt. Hope has some really beautiful spots and I would like to think we were as respectful as possible (except when we accidentally stayed in an hour past closing time and actually got locked in... whoops!).

Apparently, this has been unofficially proclaimed Skirt Week, since I'm totally embracing these new Pinup Girl Clothing skirts for fall. This spiderweb print Jenny is obviously longer than the Darling Dames fetish print skirt I wore in my last post, but I absolutely love it with the addition of a petticoat. I don't know why I waited so long to get this Tatyana coffin purse, either – I'm obsessed with it (and my parents brought me back the pink version from their recent trip to Vegas!). It may not be the most versatile of looks for year-round wear, but I love this as an alternative to dressing up in a specific costume for Halloween!

Darling Dames

pinup girl clothing darling dames

I never really thought I was much of a "skirt girl." I've always been way more into dresses, and a lot of the time, I'd rather pay a little bit extra to have a full outfit, rather than half of one. But I have to give credit to my blogging besties, especially Ashley, for making me into a skirt convert! I am now very pro-skirt... especially with a skirt as special as this one!

I've added a few skirts to my wardrobe over the past few months, but I think this fetish print skirt has to be my favorite. I love that it's subtly naughty, and the length is great for my 5'7" frame (plus: pockets!). Because Ashley and I both own this awesome Darling Dames skirt (and I think we both qualify as darling dames, ourselves), we decided we'd do a double styling of it today on our blogs! If Ashley and I can't be in the same place, at least we can have matching outfits! ;)

I actually wore this outfit for the press night of a burlesque comedy show, Princess Wendy's Late Nite Tease Room, during the Fringe Festival last month. (I wore my PUG burlesque print dress another night – Fringe gives me the chance to wear my kookiest stuff!) It's a little bit sexy and a little bit spooky, yet totally covered up and approachable, so it was a no-brainer for a weird + wild work event. I've worn this skirt a few times since, which means that it's a surprisingly versatile piece for me. I love how Ashley styled the skirt – it shows how well it can work for a daytime look as well as an evening one. You can see more of Ashley's photos and find her outfit details over at Southern (California) Belle.

Friday Favorites #108: Halloween Costume Inspiration

Halloween has always been my favorite holiday; not only is it right around my birthday, but are you surprised that I love a day that's all about playing dress-up? This week's Friday Favorites post is all about Halloween outfit inspiration. I love being able to take pieces already in my closet and make a unique costume from them!

Although I'm usually much more drawn towards the '50s and '60s, this year, I'm going '20s! I'm totally obsessed with Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, and this year, I'm being Phryne Fisher for Halloween! You'll see my actual costume here on the blog soon, but in the meantime, here are some of my favorite flapper pieces:

Storybook characters are probably my favorites for costume ideas, which is what made me think of this simple (yet effective) Alice in Wonderland idea. I'd probably use all of these pieces on a regular basis, which makes it even better!

Since I had a nod to Cinderella in my last post, I thought making an actual costume out of the same dress would be fun! It only needed a few small tweaks, really.

I love this Birthday Barbie costume idea!

When I first saw this Dee Dee colorway, I immediately thought of Dorothy Gale – so why not use it for a Wizard of Oz-inspired get-up?

Or if you're not into wearing a costume but still want to get into the Halloween spirit, here are some fun options to try!

And finally, some spooky + kooky bags!

Cinderella

pinup girl clothing castle dress

Sometimes my outfit photos appear on my blog in a very timely manner... and then other times, they'll sit on my computer for a while before I finally get around to posting them. My dear friend Rusty and I took these photos over the summer, but because I had such a large backlog of pictures, I decided to save them for Halloween costume inspiration. Rusty came with me to Warner Castle – a location neither one of us had been to before – and we had a pretty magical morning! We even found our own little Lucifer roaming around!

This castle print dress from Pinup Girl Clothing hasn't gotten a lot of wear yet, but that's because I feel like it's almost too special to wear all the time. Does anyone else do that? I know clothes are meant to be worn and loved (and mine are!), but there are some pieces to which I feel very attached and only bring out for certain occasions. If only I had glass slippers (or jelly heels) to match! It could definitely work for a costume in a bind (like many of my dresses), but I have some even more costume-y posts in the works! ;)

Girl Squad: Tea Time Style

tea time

Ashley and I are joining Katie and Amanda over on their blog today for a special group post! We've teamed up with Deer Arrow to style their adorable "tea time" brooches – and we each happened to wear them with beautiful vintage pieces. I'm obsessed with afternoon tea (what's not to love??), and have several tea-themed pieces of jewelry, but this little brooch set is by far the sweetest in my collection. We figured that this group post was the next best thing to getting the four of us together for teatime – though I can't wait for when that finally happens!
