Friday Favorites #114

I'm living for the weekends these days, so I'm really glad it's finally Friday again. I did most of my Christmas shopping during the Black Friday bonanza, so I'm [mostly] on a bit of a shopping ban... unless I see something I just have to have... ;)  Here are some of the things I'm coveting this week:

The red version of these heels haven't arrived at ModCloth yet (they'll eventually be available in 4 different colors), but I'm eventually going to need a pair of these scalloped beauties!

I love these scalloped holiday-worthy heels, too!

I might need these pjs (and matching stocking)!

It's sort of too late for this year, but I really do want this inappropriate Hanukkah sweatshirt:

I adore this present purse!

I want to get one of these cat packs for Pumpkin!
You can read more about them here and find the full assortment on Amazon.

If you really wanna #treatyoself this holiday, you can order these amazing Star Wars themed ice creams online! This company also has some other amazing-sounding flavors.

I've really been struggling with anxiety lately, and I've been hearing so much about these types of adult coloring books and how they can help. These two are on my wish list for Christmas, but let me know if you might have other recommendations!

These illustrations by Philippa Rice are wonderful. I really want her book.

Three really good reads from this week:

The Five Stages of Ghosting Grief – this is all too real!

How To Hygge (Or: 29 Ways To Actually Enjoy Winter) – although I'm not ready for the cold, these ideas make the thought of wintertime sound much more bearable!

The Radical Potential Of A Woman Crying In Public – as a woman who cries a LOT, I found this incredibly captivating.

And finally (speaking of crying), I love this story of a husband writing down things that made his wife cry. So sweet and funny!

Breana

voodoo vixen breana

When you live in Upstate (or Western, to some) New York, you learn to appreciate long-sleeved dresses. It's starting to get really chilly up here, and my light cotton dresses are no longer cutting it. Fortunately, I recently added this adorable (and practical) dress from Voodoo Vixen to my collection. Although the sleeves are only 3/4-length, this baby kept me warm while snapping these photos (no easy feat!), and unlike a lot of my other pieces, it looks great with tights and boots. Plus, who could resist that collar?

I found this dress to run true to size, and although it features a (dreaded!) side zipper, I actually had no trouble zipping it up. (Fellow busty gals, you know what I'm talking about.) The collar actually unbuttons a bit as well, which is a great feature when you want to keep your 'do looking picture perfect. The skirt portion is less full than what I'm accustomed to these days (even my thin pettiskirt didn't look right underneath it, so I opted for a slip instead), but it's actually a nice change and means that it's more versatile and work-appropriate than many of my other pieces. It's always pleasant to realize you'll wear a dress more than you initially thought you would!

In case you missed Voodoo Vixen's huge Black Friday sale (or you had your heart set on a new arrival dress like this one, which were excluded from discounts), I'm offering my readers 20% off the Voodoo Vixen website with the code SB20! I've personally got my eye on this sunflower dress and this snowflake cardigan.

Have a great day!

By the book

modcloth book dress

I hope you all had a nice holiday weekend! We had a pretty low-key Thanksgiving and decorated our (unfortunately fake) Christmas tree, and I saw the movie Suffragette with my friend Rusty. I'm dying to see Brooklyn as well, but maybe that'll happen another weekend. Though I've got film on the brain, today's outfit is all about books!

Although I actually own another book print dress, I like that this one is a little more colorful – and since my other one is currently too small on me, this one's way more comfortable too. My sense of style has definitely evolved over the past couple of years; although I'm usually drawn to fuller, longer skirts these days, this outfit reminds me of my early blogging days. It's both fun and practical, which can't always be said of my more retro-inspired looks. I don't consider my style to fit into any one category... I just like what I like. I guess my style isn't really "by the book." I don't really overanalyze it. If only that could transfer to other areas of my life.

Merlot + Gold

unique vintage roman holiday dress

I can't believe Thanksgiving is tomorrow! I've always found that having pretty dresses for the holidays makes me even more excited for festivities, and this oxblood colored dress from Unique Vintage is no exception. I love the scalloped neckline and rich color, and the addition of the sleeves to this style comes in very handy for the cooler weather here. I found this particular style to run smaller than some other house brand vintage dresses, so I'd recommend sizing up – especially if you're like me and would prefer to have a bit of wiggle room in the waist to make it through Thanksgiving dinner!

I don't wear a ton of jewelry, but I do love delicate necklaces (especially in gold for the holidays!). I've featured my custom name necklace from Onecklace before on my blog, which I wear often, but when they reached out to me again to review another item, I wanted to try something different. It's weird: music is such a huge part of my life, but I don't actually own that many music-themed pieces! As a singer (and as the child of two musicians), I had to go for this beautiful treble clef necklace. It's the perfect length (which you can choose yourself, along with your choice of chain and finish), and it's of excellent quality. Although I opted to review a necklace, Onecklace also makes earrings, bracelets and rings, and they have a huge selection filled with awesome gift ideas! If you're looking for something special for the holidays (for yourself or someone else!), you can use the code Sammi10 at checkout for 10% off your purchase!

I'm also totally thrilled that I finally have some Loly in the Sky flats to call my own! I love these dressy gold flats (aren't the squared-off toes such a cute feature?), and they're going to become a staple for many of my holiday outfits. Pretty much all of their shoes are so charming and sweet – I have about five pairs on my wish list right now, like these sprinkle flats(!) and these quotation mark flats. Although I normally wear a size 9 in heels, I sometimes wear an 8.5 in flats, and I was advised to size down to the 8.5 on these; the fit is absolutely perfect, and they're super comfortable and padded on the inside. Even the packaging the shoes came in was adorable!

I'm feeling very thankful for all of the new and exciting things that have come my way this year: lots of new creative opportunities, achieving personal goals, new beginnings. I still have lots of work to do on myself, but that's always going to be the case. Right now, I'm glad to be where I am, and I feel very lucky to be surrounded by lots of love and constant support. I'm also thankful for pumpkin pie and my mom's mashed potatoes. :) What are you most thankful for this year?

Have a happy Thanksgiving!

Gone Glamping

hey viv pink skirt

I'm popping in for a quick post this morning to showcase this adorable Happy Camper brooch from Erstwilder – and to appreciate what's probably the last of the warmer weather for a while. It actually snowed last night (gah!), but I like that it's finally feeling a little more holiday-like now. At least I had time to wear my peasant top from Pinup Girl before the cold really hits! I've never been an outdoorsy type in the camping sense, but I'd be up for it in a cute little trailer like this (and maybe with more amenities than normal).

I had a much-needed, low-key weekend for the most part, which involved lots of good food, great movies and snuggly company. If you've never seen The Brothers Bloom, I highly recommend it. I'd never even heard of it before, but I ended up really loving it. In contrast, yesterday was kind of anxiety-filled. I don't want to rehash all the details, but it's the sort of thing that happens just when you're moving on and feeling happy, and something from your past decides to weasel its way back into your life against your will. It's really hard for me to shake things off sometimes (I think that's part of being so highly sensitive), but I'm trying to prioritize what really needs my energy, and figure out what will best serve me. It sounds selfish, but if it isn't beneficial or healthy for me, then I can't afford to spend my time on it. I can't be afraid to check in with myself and identify what I really need. It feels weird saying that, which is a big indication that I need to not be so worried about pleasing other people, and need to focus on pleasing myself, above all else. Sometimes it takes someone who cares about you to point out that you should care about yourself a bit more.
