Dutch Connection

the soubrette brunette: dutch connection

The snow is finally almost gone (hooray!), but just a couple of weeks ago, spring was nowhere in sight – except indoors at the George Eastman Museum. Every February, they fill the rooms of the Kodak founder's historic mansion with tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, and much more. The Dutch Connection floral display has been a tradition for over 100 years; George Eastman was inspired to create an annual display after a visit to Holland in 1860, and the current collection is based off the original orders he made with the Dutch bulb companies! I'd only ever been inside the museum once before to take promotional photos for a show I did this winter, and being able to escape the cold and take in these fragrant flowers was such a treat. I have lots of outfit posts on the way, but for now, enjoy some snaps of these beautiful blooms!

Not only did I love seeing the lovely flowers, but being able to explore George Eastman's residence was such a cool experience. They have some really beautiful displays (shown in the photos below of cameras and film dyes), and I really enjoyed exploring the rooms – especially the library and George Eastman's mom's quarters (with an incredible walk-in closet) – and seeing the beautiful architectural details everywhere. I wore this dress for the occasion, but since they don't allow tripods in the museum, I'll have to share that outfit another time this spring. I'm definitely going to visit again when the beautiful gardens are all in bloom! It'll be a perfect location for photos.

  1. This post made me so happy :) I'm from Holland now living in Canada and seeing these flowers (especially the daffodils and hyacinths) instantly transported me back to spring time in Holland. I feel like I can smell them haha! Going to go on the hunt for some spring flowers right now!

  2. Haha, so happy to see that some things are similar in different parts of the world - I am planning to go to tulip exhibition this weekend in Wilanów Royal Palace :D The tradition is not as old (it hasn't even been 10 years) but of course it's supposed to be the continuation of old palace customs.

  6. This is so pretty! I saw the museum featured on a BBC TV show called "Great American Railway Journeys" (a spinoff from "Great British Railway Journeys"!) and it looked really interesting.
