Pencil pusher

luck be a lady dress

I'm sure I've mentioned that I'm a huge devotee of the Luck Be a Lady dresses that ModCloth carries.  They're made by a UK-based brand, Closet, and they are among my most versatile dresses.  This newest version is the 5th one I own (oops); the red and purple versions I have are my go-to audition dresses, and then I have an autumnal plaid and a springy print version as well.  But since this saturated spearmint color is a favorite of mine (and I had a coupon to boot), I managed to justify getting this one.  My dear friend Ashley recently styled hers on her blog, and it reminded me that I had yet to wear mine!

Until last weekend, I hadn't much felt like getting dolled up at all.  I'd spent the last couple of weeks in grubby clothes and not putting on much makeup or doing my hair.  To be honest, it was a nice break, but I'm glad to be feeling more like myself again.  I mentioned in a recent post that I had gone to a dermatologist in an effort to get my skin cleared up, and so far, what I'm doing seems like it's had a positive effect on my skin.  Although I still wouldn't feel at all okay about going barefaced to a social event, the nice thing is that my skin has definitely calmed down quite a bit -- and that means I can wear way less makeup, since I don't have to cover up as many imperfections!  I used to have to wear a ton of liquid foundation, concealer and powder to hide blemishes and redness, but now I'm able to dust on some BareMinerals powder concealer and foundation (which isn't anywhere near as heavy as what I had been wearing) and feel great about the end result.  It's still in the beginning stages, but I hope it'll just get better from here!

  1. Yay! I love how you styled this! I'm terrible at layering so I'm loving how you did this seamlessly.
I used to struggle with REALLY bad skin for most of my life so I understand! I used to take meds which helped, but when I stopped wearing a bunch of makeup to cover my blemishes my skin really improved. I now wear Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer and it's been a godsend! I'm wishing you the best of luck <3

  3. That's awesome that your derm has been so helpful. I've been thinking I might need to find one myself - my usual early winter skin issues don't seem to be clearing up the way that they usually do, and it's really dragging me down.
I love this look. I see why you keep coming back to this dress, because it really looks fabulous on you. You look lovely in green, and I love the long sleeved blouse + pinafore dress combo. Very schoolgirl chic.

  4. I had a couple weeks of lazy dressing and minimal makeup too. It's hard when I work from home and job hunt a lot of the time now because I don't actually have to get dressed. But I feel so much better when I do!

I think this dress looks amazing on you. it's such a wonderful shape and the green plaid is wonderful. I'm loving your cute pencil necklace too.

  5. Hi Sammi! You are looking very pretty. I love Closet dresses. I'm really lucky as I used to live and still work near a shop that is a factory outlet for closet so I own about 5 of their dresses in thus shape, some were only about £10-20. I bought a green patterned one for my birthday last year which I wore like this.
I posted myself wearing a cute cartoon dress on my blog today but wish I looked immaculate or took such crisp, clear photos as you. Sigh, I know how to make a nice dress look bad!!

    The pencil is sweet too.
Well done on the skin care. X x

  6. Love the combination of black and green against a snowy backdrop. It has elements of Christmas, sure, but moreover speaks to winter as a whole and is really, really pretty.
