Truly, plaid is the quintessential autumn textile.  I feel like I need to wear it at least once or twice a week (which would be a pretty big feat, since I don't think I own quite that much plaid!).  This dress from Exile Vintage is so lovely for fall, and I knew I had to snatch it up when it became available in their shop.  The one problem is that it's quite short on me (I'm 5'7", which I don't think of as being terribly tall, but I guess it's on the taller side), so this isn't a dress that I can wear all the time as is.  So I decided to try my hand at remixing it for another post in the near future, and I like what I came up with!  I still consider myself sort of a novice at remixing pieces, but I'm very motivated to keep pushing my boundaries with it, because (drum roll, please).........

I'm starting on an additional blogging venture, as a new member of awesome style collective, Flock Together!  So in addition to blogging here at The Soubrette Brunette, I will also be blogging over at Flock Together, which focuses on remixing swapped pieces from other group members (as well as remixing items already in one's wardrobe and trying new trends in different ways).  If you're not already following Flock Together (and why wouldn't you be?), you should head on over right now and check out these marvelous ladies.  I've been an admirer of nearly all of their individual blogs -- as well as their collective one -- for quite some time, and I'm truly flattered that they would want me to join their ranks.  I feel honored to be in such good company.  My first post is scheduled a little later this month, on October 18th, so keep an eye out for that!

I love that these are actually snaps, not buttons!  It certainly helps with the obnoxious gaping problem.

Other than blogging news, I've been really busy with rehearsals... plus, I'm now sick for the second time in less than a month!  My immune system isn't the greatest, but this is bad, even for me.  I was just getting over the nasty cold I had a week ago, and now I'm sick all over again (but I'm wondering if it's bacterial this time).  I'm sure stress hasn't helped, honestly.  I'm hoping to get in to the doctor tomorrow morning.  We start up with our school tour on Thursday, so please cross your fingers that I'll be better by the time that starts (though being around little kids, we're all bound to get sick anyway)!

As of late, I'm struggling a lot with managing my disappointment in people.  I get very much "in my head" and wonder if I am too trusting (though then I wonder if I would really want to be any other way -- for how can you find love and joy if you don't trust?).  Or maybe my standards are just too high.  I know that there are a plethora of good, kind, honest people in this world, and I am lucky enough to know many of these kinds of people.  But it boggles my mind that some of the very people who I have trusted to keep my heart safe are the same people who have done it the most harm.  I know those who keep their hearts and emotions guarded at all times, who are not fully invested in relationships, as a protective measure.  I have always thought I would never want to be that way (i.e., "'tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all"), but I can now see why protecting oneself at all costs has a certain appeal.  I don't know.  I guess I'm in a weird place, since on Saturday, I realized it's been a month since my relationship ended, and I still don't know exactly how to handle things.  I guess one can never really know how to handle something like this, other than to keep moving forward.  But it's very difficult to do that without my best friend.  And the worst part of all is, I don't even know who he is anymore.  And I guess it's true: how well do you ever really know someone?

I'm keeping my chin up, and I'm going to try and make this week a good one.

Have a great Monday.

  2. This dress looks wonderful on you! The green goes very well with your hair. I totally agree with you, during autumn I'm drawn to plaid. And congrats on joining Flock Together!

  3. Okay, could you BE anymore adorable in this? That answer is no, no you could not! You are just perfect in that (even if it is short. The tights fix the issue).

Also, I just looked up what Soubrette meant and it fits so well, especially since you are an actress. Hope you are feeling better, especially with the school tour. Kindergarteners are the BIGGEST germs factories known to man.

As for the feelings of disappointment... keep going. Things get better and you are such an awesome person, even from what little we can get to know you from this blog, we know that!

Which leads tm to say... so excited you joined Flock Together!

  4. This dress looks absolutely gorgeous on you, I adore the plaid print and the colors are so perfect for autumn! I always throw a pair of leggings under my dresses that are shorter if I need to wear them to work or something as an instant fix :) But I love how you styled it with the lacy white tights here! So excited to have you as a part of FT!

  7. Yay!! So happy to have you in Flock Together Sammi!

The colors in this plaid are practically to die for - definitely one of the best I've seen around. I have the opposite problem with vintage pieces - most are too long for me - so I have to hem them drastically for a proper fit :-)

  8. Plaid is perfect for fall! I love a good flannel. :) I also hate when that whole gaping problem occurs with tops, so that's awesome that the buttons are actually snaps. Congrats on being a part of Flock Together!

I totally understand what you're going through with the whole feeling like you should just guard yourself, but don't let this experience hinder you from a better one in the future. Even though losing someone close to you is the hardest thing we probably ever go through as humans, just remember that you won't be alone forever. You are beautiful and you sweet and there is someone out there who will appreciate that and make you a thousand times more happy than someone who couldn't see that. <3

  9. I saw on facebook you were working with them now, I'm so excited for you, congrats!

On another note, I've always lived by the philosophy that the only person you can truly know is yourself. I'm a very guarded person with my emotions, but used to be very open and out there, so I know exactly where you're coming from. Don't let the fact that your relationship didn't work out though, ruin your relationships with friends, family, etc. That isn't fair for yourself and you're worth so much more than that. Eventually, you'll be able to heal and move on, but in the meantime, take solace in those closest to you, or even new people around you. It's clear, even from these comments, that there are so many people who love and care for you, myself included, and you deserve to know and truly believe that.

  10. That dress is super cute, but does scream hack-job (meaning a vintage dress that someone cut short later, or maybe even a shop owner did - I've seen a lot of that going around) to me.

I hope you feel better, and I hear ya about people being disappointing, and questioning yourself. But there is nothing wrong with having high standards. I personally believe that what many consider to be "high standards" tend to be rather traditional standards, however society has just fallen a bit, and things are no longer up to par - between what society tells what men are allowed to be, the acceptance of sweatpants being worn as normal-day wear, etc. - it's all so disappointing in general.

  11. Ah, I love this dress! The colours are gorgeous. You're too adorable!

I just checked out Flock Together as I hadn't heard of it before. Looks like a great project with a great group of people! I'll definitely be following :)

As far as disappointment, it's a difficult and conflicting thing to deal with. But don't doubt your standards! I think one of the best things to remember is that this is your life, and you deserve the best from it! <3

  13. Grah I love that dress - amazing color and I am totally in love! I'm suspicious that it's been shortened but it's still oh so lovely! :) PS. People are always disappointing. Well, most will disappoint you. Think of it that way and then you'll find those lovely souls that never disappoint you and you know how to treasure them!

  14. Super excited to start swapping with you, Sammi! You look gorgeous in this picture and I'm obsessed with your horse ring. I hope your week is looking up already - it can be rough when you're disappointed by those who matter most to you, but don't let them take you down. You just learn and move on and become all the wiser. :)

  15. Heehee. That mini picnic hamper is adorable! I am totally obsessed with lunch boxes actually. I collect interesting things to put lunch in. Picnic hampers and tin boxes are my favourites. That little rocking horse ring is also totally beautiful. I hope you had a nice picnic with it. :D

Just found you from flock together and looking forward to seeing more.
