Stripes and Sunflowers

pinup girl clothing striped jenny skirt

These photos are a few weeks old, but posting them now gives me the chance to relive a perfect afternoon! My dear friend Rusty came home for a few days, and I felt so lucky to spend some time with him. We were determined to take photos in this big sunflower field – and we got there just in time. Most of the sunflowers were past their prime, but we managed to find a section of late-bloomers... which is sort of appropriate for Rusty and me, actually. We've talked about (and bonded over) how we each have needed a bit more time than other people might in order to find our place and our stride. But once we find it, we tend to bloom beautifully.

After spending the golden hour amongst golden flowers, we enjoyed a delicious dinner at a pizzeria Rusty recommended. I could (and often do) spend hours catching up with Rusty when we've been apart. Although I have a fairly large circle of acquaintances from the theatre community, it's rare for me to find such a supportive friend with whom I connect so deeply. Three of my closest theatre friends aren't living in Rochester right now, so what time I do get to spend with them is precious. Rusty recently figured out that he's a fellow Highly Sensitive Person, and I love being able to relate to him on that level, too. I wish he was here all the time, but he's off doing wonderful things with an equally wonderful theatre company down in Virginia. I'm so proud of everything he's accomplishing, and I'm grateful to know that he feels the same way about what I'm doing here.

Happy Haunts

halloween outfits

This post – or the idea of it, anyway – has been in the works for quite a while. My dear friends Rusty and Henry have appeared on my blog before (find other posts here and here), but we've wanted to do a post with all three of us for at least a year. Since Henry is moving to New York City in a couple of weeks, and Rusty is busy doing youth theatre tours out of Auburn, NY for the next 8+ months, I'm so glad the stars finally aligned in time for us to do this spooky Halloween post!

As a group, we tend to play a lot of quirky characters and villains, so a ghostly post seemed pretty perfect for us. We headed to Mount Hope Cemetery (where Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass, among many others, are buried) to snap a few photos. In all honesty, I generally dislike when people pose on or near gravestones, but Mt. Hope has some really beautiful spots and I would like to think we were as respectful as possible (except when we accidentally stayed in an hour past closing time and actually got locked in... whoops!).

Apparently, this has been unofficially proclaimed Skirt Week, since I'm totally embracing these new Pinup Girl Clothing skirts for fall. This spiderweb print Jenny is obviously longer than the Darling Dames fetish print skirt I wore in my last post, but I absolutely love it with the addition of a petticoat. I don't know why I waited so long to get this Tatyana coffin purse, either – I'm obsessed with it (and my parents brought me back the pink version from their recent trip to Vegas!). It may not be the most versatile of looks for year-round wear, but I love this as an alternative to dressing up in a specific costume for Halloween!

Cinderella

pinup girl clothing castle dress

Sometimes my outfit photos appear on my blog in a very timely manner... and then other times, they'll sit on my computer for a while before I finally get around to posting them. My dear friend Rusty and I took these photos over the summer, but because I had such a large backlog of pictures, I decided to save them for Halloween costume inspiration. Rusty came with me to Warner Castle – a location neither one of us had been to before – and we had a pretty magical morning! We even found our own little Lucifer roaming around!

This castle print dress from Pinup Girl Clothing hasn't gotten a lot of wear yet, but that's because I feel like it's almost too special to wear all the time. Does anyone else do that? I know clothes are meant to be worn and loved (and mine are!), but there are some pieces to which I feel very attached and only bring out for certain occasions. If only I had glass slippers (or jelly heels) to match! It could definitely work for a costume in a bind (like many of my dresses), but I have some even more costume-y posts in the works! ;)

Popcorn Love

popcorn dress

Have you ever wished for an imaginary dress to exist... only to have your wish come true?? This was the first time that's ever happened to me – with the kooky novelty print of my dreams! I had been hoping to find a popcorn dress for a while now, and when this one showed up on ModCloth, I had to get it immediately. Because my dear friend Rusty (who is not only one of my favorite people but is also one of the biggest supporters of my blog) is my kitschy kindred spirit, I asked if he'd like to tag along for a day of film-themed fun!

I originally wanted to take a trip to an older drive-in theater in Avon, NY for this popcorn post, but because it's quite a drive and they weren't showing anything we were interested in seeing, we decided to nix the long trip in favor of visiting a couple of old movie houses right in the city. Although many of the older theaters are long gone, we're lucky enough to still have the Cinema Theater and The Little Theatre here in town; both have such beautiful and charming features, and I think it's so important to keep independent theaters like these alive. Rusty and I took some photos at the Cinema before heading over to The Little to see Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (which I highly recommend!). I bet you can tell from Rusty's outfit that he and I are like two style peas in a pod (or kernels on a cob?)!

Have you seen any good movies lately? I've recently seen Inside Out, Trainwreck and Shaun the Sheep (all of which I really liked). Amy and Mr. Holmes are on my list, but let me know if there are any others you think I should add!

Have a great start to your week!
