Sugar rush

I'd sort of forgotten about this dress!  I didn't like how it looked on me for a long time.  The proportions seemed "off" somehow, and though I've worn it a couple of times before on the blog (here and here), I always had to style it with another layer.  But now I really like this particular styling.  Funny how time can change your perspective (and how true that is for so many different things).

In other news, I'm leaving for NYC today!  I really need to just get out of this town for a little while, and even though it's only for a long weekend, I'll take anything I can get!  I've actually been really gun-shy about going back to NY under any circumstances; not only do I have some bad memories from when I lived there, but because my ex-boyfriend still lives in the area (not to mention his new girlfriend...), there's kind of a negative connotation with that, too.  But I realized that I can't allow those things control how I choose to live my life.  I can't let the bad stuff from my past continue to have such a huge effect on what I decide to do in my future.  So I am determined to enjoy myself (I'm meeting up with a few blogger friends, as well as some friends from college that I haven't seen in a long time), and I'm determined to think very seriously about the possibility of moving back to the area.  It's obviously where I need to be, it's where I have connections, friends and unfinished business.  It's going to take me a while to feel financially-secure enough to make actual plans, but as long as I'm moving towards a goal, I think that's what's important.

On the radio

ModCloth romper
Novelty print romper
ModCloth romper

I think this is the first time this year that I've worn a romper on my blog!  One of the fun things about this romper is that it looks like it's a very light pink from far away, but it's actually white with little red polka dots, and it has just about the cutest print ever on top of it -- it's of radios, alarm clocks and telephones!  It sort of felt like something I'd wear to a pool party, so I decided that I'd try taking some of my photos by our pool, for a tiny change of scenery.  I know my backyard probably gets boring to look at, but I really hate taking photos in public!  People always stare at you and ask what you're doing, and having to take photos when you're self-conscious is never pleasant.  However, once I get my license (soon!), I'll at least be able to find some different and secluded locations.  Until then, our yard (and today, our pool) will have to do.

I'm not exactly sure why I've never worn this romper on here before.  I think part of it is that a lot of rompers (this one included) can be a little tricky to photograph, in terms of having them look flattering in a many of the shots.  I weighed significantly more back when I bought this romper, and then I ended up losing weight before I could wear it, so it had been noticeably too big on me for a while.  It's still a little baggy in some areas, but since I've gained back a little weight (the eternal struggle...), this piece looks better on me.  You win some, you lose some.

Speaking of winning some/losing some... I don't talk a whooole lot about my theatrical life on here -- partially because I like keeping it separate from my blog, but also because I'm a little superstitious, which is why I don't usually mention much about auditions before they happen.  I had an audition for a project last night that I was really excited about the prospect of being involved in, and I got my hopes up.  Normally, not being cast wouldn't bother me so much, but because I put so much into it and because of some other circumstances, this one really got to me.  I try to take away something from every audition, even when the outcome wasn't what I was hoping for, but sometimes putting that into practice proves difficult.  I guess one thing is that there are certain aspects of an audition you simply don't have control over, and one of those things is the director's vision.  Even if you think the director's interpretation of a character (or even of the writing) is totally off-base... there's nothing you can really do about it, other than to do the best work you can.  And the other thing I got out of this, frankly, is that I really do need to get out of Rochester as soon as I am financially able.  It's becoming very frustrating to try and do theatre here, and at this point, there's not much more I can do for my career here.  I feel stuck a lot of the time, because I don't know what my next move is going to be.  But I'm trying to plug away and not lose sight of what I want to do.

On the other hand, the winning part of being here for the time being is that I'm going to be working for a princess party company (mostly on weekends), which will be fun because obviously, I have always wanted to be an actual princess and now I can be.  Sometimes the opportunities that come your way aren't the ones you initially anticipated.  And maybe it's better that way.  I'm just trying to embrace them as they come.

Blossom Dearie

Isn't this dress pretty??  I snagged this Bernie Dexter dress along with this one during one of Bernie's last chance sales.  This cherry blossom print is decidedly springy (I wish I'd had it back when they were in bloom!), but I knew it'd be pretty for summertime, too.  The skirt of this dress is a little less full than others I have, so I opted not to wear a crinoline with it, but I think it'd look nice with one, too.  I have a little cropped pink cardigan that would go perfectly with this dress, so I think I'll try my hand at styling it when the weather gets a little cooler, too.  Who says you can't wear florals in the fall?

My mom and I are heading to the Sterling Renaissance Festival today!  It's one of my favorite summer traditions.  We usually eat our way through the faire (is there any other way?).  I hardly ever drink, but they have these concord wine slushes that are absolutely amazing (they taste just like grape juice, which is the only reason I like them).  The turkey legs are always way too much for me to handle, though!  We always love watching all of the acts -- though our favorite one is curiously absent from our faire this year, sadly.  I have a couple of friends who have worked at various Ren Faires, and while I think it would be a really fun gig, I have such trouble with improv that it's probably not in the cards for me (unless I learn how to get out of my head and not freeze up).  I have such an appreciation for actors who can think on their feet like that.

I'm gearing up for a very busy and exciting week ahead.  I have an audition tomorrow (and it's my best friend Wayne's birthday), a photo shoot on Tuesday (for a new job!), and I'm heading down to NYC on Thursday for a long weekend of fun and friends!  I'll get into all of that in my next post.  For now, I'm off to the Faire!  Have a wonderful rest of your weekend!

Friday Favorites #59

Happy Friday, everyone.  This week has been hard for a lot of people, I think, so here are some things that have made me smile over the past few days:

I love these sweet lucky cat pieces from Kate Spade!  They remind me so much of my kitty.

I've been admiring this sweet kawaii dress for a while now:

UNICORN SHOES (they literally have a horn on the toe)!

This Betsey Johnson backpack is so deliciously Barbie-esque:
I absolutely adore this swimsuit from Sugardoll Swim.  It seems like the bottoms shown are no longer available (which is a shame), but you can find the top here and a different pair of bottoms here.

This cherry print dress from Trashy Diva is so lovely.  It comes in several different styles, but I was especially taken with the high neck of this one:
This tomato ring is so cute!
Speaking of tomatoes (and fruit in general)... I don't know why, but this Buzzfeed piece made me laugh SO hard.  It's probably the captions.

I might need these cotton candy socks:

I really love this straw fascinator headband!
These might be the most darling cookies I've ever seen.  I only wish they were somehow root beer-flavored (but I'm pretty sure they aren't)!

Most adorable makeup bag ever?  I think yes.
This animal embroidery is absolutely breathtaking.  See more here!

This little cassette tape purse is right up my alley:
I loved this piece, and if you're a child of the '90s, you will too.
Finally, if you haven't seen this video of Robin Williams meeting Koko the Gorilla... do yourself a favor and watch it immediately.  What a wonderful man he was.

Have a great weekend.

Just right

Aside from my obvious dark tresses, I otherwise felt like I was channeling Goldilocks in this dress.  I have this same dress in red (I wore it on my blog last year), but hadn't worn this baby blue version until now.  It's decidedly sweet lolita and doesn't exactly fit into my daily work life or anything, but it's a very sweet piece.  I ordered both dresses at the same time because I was unsure of sizing, and the dresses were quite cheap anyway.  I figured one wouldn't fit and I'd sell the other, but much to my surprise, both fit fine (though this one is a little more roomy), and I couldn't quite bring myself to sell one yet.  So both are staying in my wardrobe for now.  I have attachment issues with my clothes!

I also knew that I'd have to pair my wooden house purse with this dress because, well, how could you not??  I'm sometimes amazed at the items I've managed to find on eBay.  I don't even hear a whole lot about eBay anymore (there used to be a ton of commercials for it and it was really popular for a while), but there are so many hard-to-find and unique pieces available there.  I hate bidding for items (though I have been lucky a couple of times), but the "buy it now" option is fantastic.  This little house purse is definitely one-of-a-kind and I'm so happy it's mine!
