Nifty fifties

Outfit Details:
Daily Special Dress: ModCloth (on sale!)
Customized name necklace: c/o Onecklace
Betsey Johnson purse: ModCloth
Saddle shoes: Payless

As anyone who reads my blog probably knows, I am a sucker for a kitschy novelty print.  And when that print has an overload of 1950s nostalgia?  Forget it!  I knew I had to have this dress when it arrived, and it's fortunate that I love the print so much, because I'm not totally sold on the fit.  In my opinion, this dress runs a tad tight.  I have to size up for the bust in these types of dresses, and the large just fit; although there is no gaping, I wish there was a little more breathing room.  The silhouette is actually a little different than how it appeared on the website, too.  There's some pleating on the skirt, but it starts where a drop waist would, so I was concerned that it would be unflattering.  Luckily, I think the dress looks fine the way it is, but I have to admit that the Bea & Dot in-house brand from ModCloth sometimes leaves a little something to be desired in the fit department (even though their designs are usually beautiful).  I'm sure it's something with which they're still tinkering, so hopefully they'll continue to make improvements to their sizing.

Speaking of making improvements to sizing... I've started back on Weight Watchers (after more than a year-long hiatus), and I'm really determined and excited about it.  I first went on Weight Watchers back in 2011, a little while after I graduated college, and I had a lot of success on the program -- I lost about 45 pounds in about 8 months.  I had actually been called in to audition for a Weight Watchers commercial, and then subsequently called back, but I didn't end up booking it, which was really discouraging and actually led me to stop doing the program the way I should have been.  Ironically, I had gone on Weight Watchers because I knew I wouldn't be able to play the roles I wanted to in my career if I didn't lose weight... so it was an even more devastating blow when I couldn't book a Weight Watchers commercial once I'd lost it.  (In retrospect, the fact that I was a performer might have worked against me, but I digress.)  I've been dealing with a lot of emotional stuff over the past year, and like many people, I always turn to food for comfort.  It's definitely a vice for me, and weight gain is incredibly sneaky!  Not only are some of my clothes fitting more tightly than they used to, but there are some dresses I simply can't wear right now because of my weight -- which was exactly the wake-up call I needed!  My dresses are some of my favorite possessions (is that sad?  Don't answer that!), so it's hurtful to think of not being able to wear them!  I decided then and there to go back on Weight Watchers and make a real effort to implement consistent exercise into my routine.  I've been back on it since last week, and already feel happier and more energetic because of it.  It's so easy to slip into the habit of making unhealthy choices, and it just feels good to make healthy ones!  It's going to be an adjustment, for sure, but I'm going to take it one day at a time.  :)

Have a great Tuesday!

  2. I think the fit looks flattering! I agree though, sometimes the fit are a bit wonky on the in-house brands... I find the Myrtlewood waists are way too high for my natural waist. Thankfully, I can usually remedy this with a belt, and it's not noticeable.

I also hate that you mentioned it was on sale. Even more tempting to splurge on it!

  4. I totally understand your mindset of turning to food for comfort. I feel like i'm in the same boat as you both emotionally and physically. I've also recently tried a lot harder to workout and eat better, but it can be a very discouraging process going through it alone, so thank you for sharing this with us, it definitely helps me keep going!

I hope today is as lovely for you as you are

  6. I wish sizing was better especially for busty ladies. I want some waist definition and breathing room at the same time! lol

I'm thinking of going on Weight Watchers though not quite sure what it is. I have heard you get a certain amount of points and you eat foods based on those numbers?

  8. I think the fit actually looks great, although I totally understand the uncertainty of wearing something cut differently to you're used to and not liking it! Amazing print though and gorgeous bag. CC x

  10. Yet another dress that we both have :) I also ordered a large, and had the same issue with the chest. I think the dress looks like it fits you perfectly!
You look so darling in this outfit! The shoes & purse are just perfect with the dress.
    Good luck with WW.

  11. I think winter in generally can make it harder to make healthy choices (or at least, that's what I'm telling myself since my A1C1- a test diabetic people take about 4 times a year- went up instead of down this last time. So sad, but the kick I needed for sure to try to be healthier! Anyway, good luck with WW!

You look darling, darling, darling in this! It is so kitschy and fun!

  12. I love that dress I almost ordered it myself when I saw it was on sale and I am sad to hear that it doesn't fit quite right. I'm somewhat busty and find it hard to find button up clothes whether it be dresses or shirts that don't have the gaping effect and its the worst cause sizing up isn't always a solution for the rest of the fit. I did weight watchers many moons ago and had success but this last summer of too much ice cream, drinking and brunches was not kind to me and I've been trying to get back at it almost all year (as they say much easier to gain then to lose). Either way I totally agree that it was my clothes that was a wake up call I also have a strong attachment to some of my vintage clothes so simply not fitting in them has left me sad. I just want to get healthier and more active now that winter is finally ending here in Chicago! I would love to hear more about your opinion and progress with WW since I've been debating trying it again myself.

    1. Justine - I'll definitely keep everyone updated, if there's interest! I find fitness and weight loss blogs annoying, so it'd never turn into that, but I'll certainly make note of my progress. I totally empathize though -- food is my weakness and my weight has always been a struggle. But at least it's spring and much less tempting to snuggle under the covers with junk food (usually)! :)

  14. That dress is amazing and I love the classic color scheme!
It's hard for me to stick to eating healthy, especially on the weekend. I tend to cheat more then. I think it's even harder for me to stick to an exercise routine because I really don't find it fun AT ALL. It takes a lot of will power for me to keep doing it. I'm really surprised I actually finished the Insanity program. It also sucks when you don't have time because you're doing a bajillion other things and when you have free time, you are too exhausted to exercise. Le sigh. Oh life... lol.

  15. You're so right- the sizing seems a little "all over the place" for Bea&Dot, but I'm so glad the prints make up for the tricky sizing!

Good luck with Weight Watchers! I tried it about a year ago, and it worked wonders for me- I should go back on it, it's the only thing that has ever really worked for me. It certainly does feel SO good to make healthy decisions but unhealthy ones are sometimes (always) easier to make. You've inspired me!

  17. I don't think it's "sad" in the slightest that some of your dresses are amongst your most prized possessions, nor that the desire to fit into them how you'd ideally like to is a driving motivator for you on the fitness front. I can honestly not think of anything that helps me try to stay within a certain weight range (as much as some rather nasty meds I have to take, some of my chronic illnesses, and a uber slow metabolism try to create havoc for me on this front) than the desire to be able to wear all of my beloved wardrobe items.

I think you're drop-dead gorgeous as you are, but fully understand the feeling of not being super happy with your size and wish you all the best with your goals on that front, dear gal.
